NMR: Novice Level, Spectrum 3

Formula: C3H8O

Answer: Isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol)

Chemical Shift Assignments:

1H NMR: δ 1.19 (d, 6H), 1.75 (1H, broad), 4.00 (septuplet, 1H)

13C NMR: 63.9, 25.3 ppm

The formula indicates no degrees of unsaturation. The two methyl groups are enantiotopic and necessarily equivalent. The six protons at δ 1.19 split the methine proton at δ 4.00 into a septuplet. Conversely, the methine proton splits the methyl groups into a doublet. The broad singlet at δ 1.75 is the hydroxyl hydrogen. The 13C spectrum reveals only two singlets. The two methyl carbons are equivalent (25.3 ppm) and the signal at 63.9 ppm is in the range for a carbon attached to oxygen. Return to Menu.
