1H NMR: Intermediate Level, Spectrum 14

Formula: C5H5N

Answer: Pyridine

1H NMR: δ 8.60 (2H, m), 7.65 (1H, tt, J = 8.0, 1.6 Hz), and 7.26 (2H, m)

13C NMR: 148.8, 134.9, and 122.8 ppm.

The degree of unsaturation is 4. The 13C spectrum reveals three different types of carbon and the 1H NMR spectrum displays three groups of aromatic hydrogens. These data suggest that each carbon bears one hydrogen atom and that that there are to C-H arrangements that are the same. Pyridine appears to satisfy this structure. The single hydrogen at δ 7.65 is a triplet of triplets coupled to the blue ortho hydrogens (J = 8.0 Hz) and to the red meta hydrogens (J = 1.6 Hz). Return to Menu.
