Emil Fischer (1852-1919)
Studied at Bonn with Kekule (1871) and received his Ph.D. under Adolf von Baeyer at Munich (1874) . He was a professor at Munich (1879), Erlangen (1882), Wurzburg (1885), and succeeded Hofmann as professor and director of the Chemical Institute in Berlin.
- Developed the use of phenylhydrazine for the derivatization and identification of carbohydrates.
- Proved the relative configuration of the structure of glucose.
