Solution: Oxygen (18O) labeled tertiary butyl alcohol (1) is readily converted to the stable carbocation 3 and labeled water. The carbocation is trapped by acetic acid to form tertiary butyl acetate (5). Note that protonated alcohol 2 is regenerated in the process.
