Research Research in the Phillips group is framed by biologically active natural
products and the exciting opportunities afforded by their structures and
functions.  At the structural end of the spectrum we focus our efforts on
questions relating to the development of new methods and strategies for the
synthesis of natural products, with an emphasis on brevity of synthesis.
Our interests in the functions of natural products span target
identification and the role of natural products in cancer biology, but are
ultimately guided by what we believe is an important challenge for the field
of synthetic chemistry: the systematic, de novo, production of small
molecules that can perform the same biological tasks as complex natural

Against this backdrop, key research goals in the group at the current time
are to:

1. Develop small molecules that can access the diverse biology that nature
modulates with small peptides and oligonucleotides.

2. Identify natural products that affect 'undruggable' targets such as
protein-protein interactions and, with the information gleaned from this,
develop small molecules to tackle these challenges.

3. Identify small molecules that affect the regulation of genes that produce
secondary metabolites.
